Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, according to a major-league source.

The Blue Jays can let the claiming team have Rios and the over $60 million remaining on his contract, or they can pull him back from waivers and keep him. Another option would be to work out a trade with the team that claimed him.

Among the teams that may have claimed Rios: The Red Sox, who have tremendous financial flexibility; the White Sox, who have long liked Rios but just made a major investment in Jake Peavy; and the Giants, who turned down the Jays' offer of Rios for Tim Lincecum after the 2007 season.
Rios is hitting .261 this season with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs. He was an All-Star in 2006 and '07.

ESPN.com first reported that Rios has been claimed on waivers.

great thing sabean didn't mess that one up.
I doubt we'll take over his massive contract

Rios still has six years remaining on a seven-year deal worth US$69.35-million.
How the wavier order works? Worst record from last year or currently?
I'm not going to call this a reliable source but I found this link on the comment section in the thread Alex Rios claimed off waivers.

In Alex Rios case

The worse AL team gets first shot and the best AL team gets the last shot in the AL.

If no AL team claimed then the Worse NL team would get next shot and the best NL would have the last shot.

If it is an NL player going through waivers,

The worse NL team gets first shot and the best NL team gets the last shot in the NL.

If no NLteam claimed then the Worse AL team would get next shot and the best AL would have the last shot.

Alex Rios Claimed On Waivers, Trade Next?
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 7 at 6:16pm CST]

6:16pm: Henry Schulman of The SF Chronicle says that vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans "hinted strongly" that the Giants are not the team that claimed Rios.
Here is a link where Bobby Evans hinted that its not the Giants.

yes, and we THOUGHT about it too. Sabean didnt want to deal young pitching, so he didnt, however......he did say that the Jays wanted Cain or Lincecum, and he opted to look into Lincecum first, because he though Cain was more valuable.

thank goodness we avoided that disaster. if Sabean wasnt so protective of our pitching prospects, we might have a .260 mediocre power OF instead of our ace.

not that Rios wont end up good. hes still young.
I wouldn't mind either way I like my team as is.
