SCOTTSDALE — The Giants were very encouraged by Hayden Birdsong‘s outing earlier this week. It now appears it will be his final one for several months, and possibly longer.Birdsong felt elbow discomfort during that Tuesday relief appearance, and an MRI revealed a Grade 2 strain of his forearm and a UCL sprain. The 24-year-old right-hander is weighing his options for treatment and will fly to Dallas soon to meet with Dr. Keith Meister. The Giants are hopeful that Birdsong will be able to rehab the injury, but they also are realistic. This diagnosis often ends with Tommy John surgery, which would end Birdsong’s 2026 season before it started and likely keep him out for much of the first half in 2027, too.“It’s certainly not best-case scenario, but hopefully we get best-case scenario of the unfortunate circumstances,” manager Tony Vitello said Sunday morning.
