What we learned as Landen Roupp’s gritty outing fuels Giants’ win vs. Dodgers

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants felt good about the progress they made over the back half of their long road trip, but their return to Oracle Park brought their toughest test of the season. They ended up getting their best win. Landen Roupp was sharp early and the rebuilt bullpen shut the Los Angeles Dodgers down over the final four innings of a 3-1 win on Tuesday, the 10th of the year for the Giants. Six Giants pitchers combined to allow just three hits, which tied a season-low for the Dodgers, who entered 10 games above .500.In their first inning at Oracle Park in nearly two weeks, the Giants sent eight hitters to the plate and scored three runs. They got plenty of help and took full advantage. The bottom of the first started with a grounder to short that Hyeseong Kim threw into the visiting dugout. After a single by Luis Arraez and a walk of Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers whistled an RBI single just past the glove of second baseman Alex Freeland. But it was enough. Keeping It GoingRoupp’s first start against the Dodgers last year was a disaster and the shortest of his career. He walked five batters at Dodger Stadium last June 14 and lasted just 1 2/3 innings, but he cruised through the beginning of this one. Those command issues popped up in the fourth, though. Roupp walked four of the first five batters he faced in the inning, but escaped the jam when Alex Call hit a center-cut sinker to third for a double play. He came back out for a 1-2-3 fifth, qualifying for the win. He threw a career-high 106 pitches while lowering his ERA to 2.28, which ranks ninth in the NL.The Path to 27 OutsTuesday’s game gave a lot of insight into how Tony Vitello plans to get through the late innings right now. The Giants were off Monday so the bullpen was fresh, and with an early 3-0 lead, Vitello had plenty of time to think about what he would do after Roupp reached the end of the line. The first man up was lefty Ryan Borucki, who had a rough first couple of weeks but is a perfect weapon against this lefty-heavy L.A. lineup. Roupp was warming up for the top of the order and ended up coming in for the heart of it, facing three lefties and one righty. The lone righty, Teoscar Hernandez, got a double, but Borucki retired the other three. Matt Gage started the seventh and was replaced by Miller when Ohtani came up with two outs and a runner on. Ohtani had struck out in five of six previous matchups, but this time reached on an infield single. Miller got out of the inning by striking out Tucker. Miller and Keaton Winn shared the eighth before Vitello turned to Ryan Walker, who blew his last save opportunity. Lee-ding The WayLee had five multi-hit games on the road trip and was 13-for-36 overall. The hot bat was still with him on the first night back home, although it was cut short. Lee was hitting .143 at the end of the last homestand, but he’s up to .259 after notching two more hits Tuesday. The first kept a rally going, but the second one led to an awkward play at the plate. Lee’s two-out single in the sixth was followed by a single from Heliot Ramos, and third base coach Hector Borg aggressively sent Lee after Call made a lazy throw back into the infield. It had started to rain and Borg might have thought that would help, but second baseman Alex Freeland threw a strike to the plate to cut Lee down by about 10 feet.
