What we learned as Logan Webb gets roughed up in Giants’ loss to Padres

SAN FRANCISCO — Bryce Eldridge dominated the headlines, but given the offensive issues the Giants have at catcher right now, the addition of Jesús Rodríguez on Monday has the potential to be just as impactful short-term as the Giants try to dig out of this hole. Rodríguez twice brought Oracle Park to life, but the rest of the night was filled with familiar grumbles. Four of the five Giants to take the mound gave up a run in a 10-5 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Giants have dropped seven of their last eight and are 14-22 on the 2026 MLB season. The Giants took an early two-run lead when Casey Schmitt homered for a fourth straight home game, and they led 4-1 after two innings. It appeared that might be enough for Logan Webb, who seemed to turn a corner in his last couple of starts, but Webb unraveled in the fourth. The Padres scored five runs in the inning, ending Webb’s night. They added another off JT Brubaker, who needed 38 pitches to get through the fifth, and another off Ryan Borucki, who pitched the sixth. The Giants had a chance to cut into the deficit after singles from Rafael Devers and Bryce Eldridge in the sixth, but Matt Chapman struck out and Willy Adames flew out to left. It Happens FastWebb gave up a solo homer to Xander Bogaerts in the second but otherwise was sharp early, striking out four in the first three innings. It all came apart quickly in the fourth, and that has been a theme at times in his matchups with the Padres, who have totaled at least seven hits in nine of their 19 meetings with the Giants ace. Gavin Sheets started the five-run fourth with a one-out single, the first of five Padres hits in the inning. Webb also hit a batter, and he didn’t come out for the fifth despite being at only 62 pitches.Even when he’s off, Webb generally finds a way to grind through innings. The pitch count was his lowest since July 22, 2023, when he got knocked out in the second inning against the Washington Nationals. He had not thrown fewer than 77 pitches since that day.Webb was coming off a strong start in Philadelphia, but with this latest rough outing, his ERA is up to 5.06 through eight starts.On The BoardRodríguez was hitless in his MLB debut on Monday, but he was back out there Tuesday as Bailey continued what has been an extended break. He didn’t waste any time getting a milestone out of the way.Rodríguez, a .311 career hitter in the minors, poked a Walker Buehler sinker into shallow right in the second inning, picking up his first big league hit. Adames was on second and blew through a stop sign. It was a close play at the plate but Adames beat Fernando Tatis Jr.’s throw, giving Rodríguez his first career RBI, too. This was the first time since Sept. 7, 2000, that a Giant and Padre picked up their first hit in the same game, and it actually happened three times in that one. Greg LaRocca did it for San Diego, and Pedro Feliz and Juan Melo did it for San Francisco.Rodríguez followed that up with his homer, which was the rare arcade blast from a right-handed hitter. He hit just 34 homers in more than 1,800 minor league plate appearances, but the Giants believe there’s more power in that bat than what has shown in the minors.Good At Any SpotThe Giants never have had a player hit a home run while playing all four infield spots, but Schmitt is halfway there. He went deep as a third baseman in the first inning on Monday and then as a second baseman in the first inning a night later. Schmitt has also homered as a designated hitter this season.Tuesday’s blast was his sixth of the year, getting him halfway to his career-high of 12 from 2025, which so far is his only season with double-digit homers. He’s the team leader and bumped his slugging percentage up to .559, which ranks seventh in the National League.
