What we learned as Giants’ three home runs aren’t enough in loss to Diamondbacks

SAN FRANCISCO – Even on a night when the Giants couldn’t find a collective rhythm, Casey Schmitt found a way to keep his fantastic 2026 MLB season flowing.Unquestionably the Most Valuable Player in San Francisco’s lineup through the first 55 games of the year, Schmitt had two hits including his second home run in three days. It was one of the few things that the Oracle Park crowd had to celebrate on a cool Tuesday night during a 7-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The solo shot was Schmitt’s 12th home run of the season, matching his career-best set last season, and ended Rodríguez’s streak without allowing a home run at 33 2/3 innings.The Diamondbacks responded quickly in the second.Nolan Arenado walked leading off, advanced to third on Ryan Waldschmidt’s ground-rule double then scored on Ildemaro Vargas’ groundout. Other than that, the Giants starter was steady although his record fell to 1-7.After retiring the first three hitters he faced, including a rare 1U putout, Mahle got roughed up in the second when the Diamondbacks scored three runs off two hits and a walk.After that, Mahle got back on track and set down eight of the next 10 batters he faced.It hasn’t been a good stretch for San Francisco starters, so even the slightest sign of hope is worth noting. Bottom line, Mahle got the loss, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked on paper.Big BryceThe kid got a few at-bats as the Giants DH and showed some good pop while he did so.Eldridge doubled off Rodríguez in the second, his first hit against a left-handed pitcher in the majors. The rookie later missed his second professional home run when his towering drive in the fourth died at the wall in center, a 470-foot drive that would have been gone in 29 of the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. He just needs more playing time.Devers DayThe up-and-down journey that Devers has been on since the Giants acquired him took another dip on Tuesday night.Two days after dazzling the Oracle Park crowd with a grand slam, Devers had a chance for another but came up short. The veteran slugger ended the night going 1-for-4 with an RBI double.With a runner at first in the third, Devers lined into a 5-3 double play.
