The Giants made a change to first-year manager Tony Vitello’s coaching staff. San Francisco hired veteran third base coach Gary Pettis, the team announced Tuesday after USA Today’s Bob Nightengale first reported the news on Monday.Pettis permanently replaces former third base coach Hector Borg, who was reassigned to a new role last week after some questionable baserunning decisions throughout the season.Borg temporarily was replaced by former San Francisco third base coach Ron Wotus, who served as the interim third base coach in the series against the Colorado Rockies over the weekend. Pettis previously served as the third base coach/baserunning instructor for the Houston Astros from 2015-2024 after coaching third and first for the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and New York Mets from 2001-2014. Bay Area sports fans might recognize the name, because Pettis is the father of former 49ers wide receiver Dante Pettis, who was a second-round draft pick by San Francisco in 2018.
