SAN FRANCISCO – When Giants manager Tony Vitello started walking up the steps from the home dugout toward Logan Webb on the pitcher’s mound, a nervous feeling seemed to settle over the crowd at Oracle Park.Six days earlier, the Giants’ rookie skipper made the same walk and pulled Webb from one of his best starts of the 2026 MLB season, only to watch San Francisco’s bullpen immediately implode and lose.Before Sunday’s 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs, Vitello insisted the next time around he would leave any such decision in Webb’s hands going forward.Most fans were unaware of Vitello’s pregame comments, so when they saw the Giants manager walking toward the pitching mound to make a possible change, the Oracle crowd seemed to collectively hold their breath.Vitello, however, had no intention on making a pitching change.“Just walking out was to meet him on the mound, give him a timeout if anything, but then also check and see where he’s at,” Vitello said. “The ball was coming out good out of his hand.
