BOX SCORESAN FRANCISCO — On Tuesday afternoon, Giants hitting coach Hunter Mense crossed the infield and went down into the Toronto Blue Jays dugout to receive his American League Championship ring.

Mense was on Toronto’s staff last season when they led the majors in batting average and reached the World Series, and that combination got him the head job in San Francisco. That meant he was in the opposite dugout Tuesday when the Blue Jays played pepper with the outfield grass.

Giants starter Trevor McDonald was knocked out after the sixth hit of the third inning and charged with eight earned runs overall. Adrian Houser came on and completely shut the Blue Jays down, but the damage had been done. The Giants lost 9-3.

The loss continued a trend for the Giants, who have been unable to find any sort of momentum this season. They won 10-1 on Monday but followed that up with Tuesday’s clunker.
