SAN FRANCISCO — The battle for fourth in the National League West went deep into the night Friday at Oracle Park and was unexpectedly intense. When it was over, after three hours and 37 minutes, the Colorado Rockies were a game closer to the Giants.

For the sixth time this season, the Giants dropped a game in which they led after eight innings. The 4-3 loss was their 55th of the 2026 MLB season, and put them a game ahead of the Rockies with two left in the first half.

Giants closer Caleb Kilian was handed a one-run lead, but he didn’t record an out. The Rockies scored three in the top of the ninth, but reliever Jordan Romano — who entered with a 7.36 ERA — immediately ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning.

With a runner on and one out, Romano walked Luis Arraez and then gave up a line drive to center by Casey Schmitt. It was initially ruled a diving catch by Cole Carrigg, but a review overturned the call on the field and loaded the bases. The play in question pic.twitter.com/jJwT4ACh7X
