SAN FRANCISCO — It took about two and a half months for Tony Vitello to finally name a Giants closer. It might have taken less than a month to reverse that decision. After Caleb Kilian failed to record an out Friday night in a 4-3 loss, Vitello said the staff would examine all options. Kilian has given up nine runs in his last six appearances and has a 12.08 ERA in save situations.
“Yeah, I think kind of an easy out answer to everything is day to day, we’ve got to look at everything to do whatever we’ve got to do to win games,” Vitello said when asked about Kilian.
Kilian has three of the 12 blown saves thus far for what is shaping up to be one of the worst bullpens in franchise history. The Giants have blown a lead in the ninth and lost eight times this season, which, per OptaSTATS, is the most before the All-Star break in MLB history. The Giants have now blown a 9th-inning lead and lost the game 8 times this season.
That's the most by any team before the All-Star break in MLB history (since the All-Star Game began in 1933).
