Logan Webb made the National League All-Star team on his own merit, but would have given his spot up for one potential snub in a heartbeat. The Giants right-hander, selected to his third consecutive All-Star Game after a dominant June that earned him National League Pitcher of the Month honors, said he would have happily surrendered his spot to Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, who was left off the roster despite a 2.28 ERA through 14 starts.
“I would have given my spot to him for him to be here,” Webb told reporters Monday at MLB All-Star Game Media Day. “He’s one of the best pitchers in baseball. Has been for a long time. It always sucks when guys who are deserving don’t make it.”
Wheeler’s snub became a bigger story than most in recent memory. After MLB offered him a replacement roster spot following his 14-strikeout outing on Tuesday, Wheeler declined it outright. (h/t The Athletic’s Charlotte Varnes)
“They disrespected me, so I’m not going to participate,” Wheeler said.
