With the Aug. 3 trade deadline coming quicker than most realize, San Francisco is expected to part with some key players in order to bolster its roster of the future.
In an article for The Athletic, former Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden wrote that he’d like to see the Giants move on from Casey Schmitt. Bowden proposed a trade that would see San Francisco ship him and pitcher Erik Miller to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for starting pitcher George Kirby.
“San Francisco would land another top starting pitcher in Kirby to slot behind Logan Webb in its rotation,” Bowden wrote. “Adding Kirby would give the Giants a head start on replacing southpaw Robbie Ray, who is expected to be traded between now and the deadline. Kirby, 28, is making just $6.55 million. He is arbitration-eligible and controllable for 2 1/2 more years.”
