SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants placed infielder Casey Schmitt on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his left knee Tuesday.Schmitt, who has been the team’s best player this season while manning multiple positions successfully, was hurt Monday night while trying to stop after taking an aggressive turn rounding first base in the second inning. Schmitt immediately pulled up with an apparent injury and was helped off the field.

Schmitt underwent an MRI test prior to Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers which revealed the damage.

In a corresponding move, infielder Osleivis Basabe was called up from Triple-A Sacramento.

No timetable has been set for Schmitt’s return, but his injury is a big blow to manager Tony Vitello’s lineup.

In 97 games this season Schmitt already has career-highs in home runs (21), RBI (55), runs (47), hits (105) and batting average (.271).
