SAN DIEGO — The Giants had so many infielders at one point that Casey Schmitt’s best avenue to playing time was in left field. Times have certainly changed.Schmitt’s year is almost certainly over after knee surgery and Luis Arraez sat on Saturday with leg cramps, which could be another way of saying the 2026 MLB trade deadline is coming up fast. The Giants expected to at least get Matt Chapman back in the mix this weekend to solidify third base, but that’s now up in the air, as well.
Chapman has missed 26 games with an abdominal strain, and the staff is pumping the brakes on his rehab because he continues to feel discomfort while running. He was set to meet with the medical staff Saturday, and it’s possible he’ll get additional tests.
“We’ve been pushing as much as we can and it hasn’t bounced back to a spot where I can play,” Chapman said Saturday at Petco Park.
The injury technically has a four-to-eight week range, but the Giants originally hoped to get Chapman back last weekend. When that didn’t transpire, manager Tony Vitello said he was confident the third baseman would...
