Tony Vitello might be a rookie MLB manager, but he is a veteran when it comes to coaching through a period of uncertainty and player movement.The first-year Giants manager and former college coach spoke to broadcasters Roxy Bernstein and Ben McDonald during ESPN’s broadcast of San Francisco’s game against the Texas Rangers on Monday at Globe Life Field, and was asked about his emotions after the Giants’ very busy MLB trade deadline, which was the first of his professional career.
“It was chaotic … [I] kind of followed the players’ lead, to be honest with you. As opposed to players following the coach’s lead,” Vitello said. “I think at this level, everyone understands it’s a business and you’ve got to be a pro about your business. And when you’re in street clothes, you gotta figure out where you got to live, and when you’re on the field you’ve got to figure out how to win a ballgame.”
