One of MLB’s former top prospects could play a role for the Giants to close out the 2026 season. Infielder Marcelo Mayer, who San Francisco acquired in a deal that sent relief pitcher Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox before Monday’s MLB trade deadline, could be an option for the Giants at multiple infield positions.
San Francisco’s president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, joined KNBR 680’s “Murph & Markus” with Markus Boucher and fill-in host John Dickinson on Thursday and was asked about the hole at second base after Luis Arraez was traded to the Philadelphia Philles and Casey Schmitt was sidelined with a torn meniscus, and pointed to Mayer as a potential infield option at some point this season.
“With trading for Marcelo Mayer from the Red Sox, pending his health and being able to get back out on the field, we’re still looking to get an [evaluation] on him and where he’s at,” Posey said. “All signs point to him being ready to go out and get some rehab games in. He’s another guy I think could mix in at second base and some third as well.
