SAN FRANCISCO — After doing his infield work Friday afternoon, Marcelo Mayer jogged out to right field and watched some Giants teammates take batting practice. It’s a position he has never played as a professional, although given how many infielders the Giants have — and how many are on the way — perhaps that’s a conversation that will be had down the line.For the rest of this season, the holes are on the dirt, and it shouldn’t be long before the 23-year-old can fill in.
Mayer — who was acquired from the Red Sox on Monday for left-hander Erik Miller — hasn’t played since June 25 because of a stress reaction in his left forearm, but he went through a full workout at Oracle Park when the Giants returned home Friday and he’ll start a rehab assignment at some point next week. The Giants don’t think he’ll need many games in Triple-A, and it seems reasonable for him to join them on the next road trip, which happens to take them to Boston.
