SAN FRANCISCO — On Tuesday and Wednesday it was Jonah Cox, but for the next two days it was Drew Gilbert. On Saturday evening in Boston, Victor Bericoto got the call. A day later, it was Osleivis Basabe’s turn. When the Giants returned home Monday, it was Gilbert again.The Giants seem to go day-by-day with a lot of decisions right now, and that’s especially true in the leadoff spot. They’ve used 14 different players at the top of the lineup overall, including eight this month. Some of the decisions have surprised even the players who get chosen. Bericito had not hit leadoff since Double-A, while Bryce Eldridge could not remember doing it after his sophomore year of high school.
Tony Vitello is well aware of the growing list. When he decided to see if Bericoto could get to lefty Patrick Sandoval on Saturday, he looked it up to see just how many leadoff hitters he had used. He said his main concern right now is trying to balance the lineup.
