SAN FRANCISCO — It is hard to put into words how the Giants’ game played out Wednesday afternoon.Even Logan Webb and Tony Vitello struggled to sum up what they had witnessed following San Francisco’s ninth-inning collapse to the Cincinnati Reds at Oracle Park.
“Don’t really have a word for it,” Vitello said after the 10-9 loss. “It’s more than unfortunate. But what led up to that was a pretty good effort out of some guys, with the bat in particular, playing hard, but we kind of finished how we started on the first pitch, adding more stress to our life than we needed.”
San Francisco entered the ninth inning with a 9-3 lead and just three outs away from securing its first series sweep of the 2026 MLB season.
But Spencer Bivens gave up four earned runs and the rest of the bullpen collapsed behind him. In the ninth, the bullpen allowed seven hits, seven runs — including a grand slam — two walks, and struck out two.
A 9-3 lead seesawed into a 9-8 lead that became a 10-9 deficit in the blink of an eye.
“It’s tough,” Dylan Smith said postgame....
