What we learned as Logan Webb puts Giants in early hole during loss to Padres

SAN FRANCISCO — For a third straight day, the Giants attempted to come back late against a good San Diego Padres bullpen. And for a third straight day, they came up short.

Jonah Cox had a good battle with Yuki Matsui with two down in the ninth and a runner on, but he struck out, ending a 6-4 loss. After sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals to begin the homestand, the Giants got swept by the Padres.

Logan Webb’s tough second half continued, and he dug a big hole for the Giants, who got all of their early offense on a two-run homer from catcher Andrew Knizner.

The Giants had plenty of traffic against Nick Pivetta and a good Padres bullpen, but missed some opportunities in the middle of the game. They left six on base through the first seven innings, usually a backbreaker against a Padres team that might be the best in baseball over the final two.

The Padres used star relievers Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller in the first two games, though, so it was a different look Sunday. The Giants got the go-ahead run to the plate against Randy Vasquez in the eighth, but Christian Koss flew out to center to end the threat. Another Rough...
