SAN FRANCISCO — Nobody could have seen any of this coming for the 2026 Giants, but the most shocking development still might be on the way. Who could have imagined that the Giants would tie an MLB record for roster churn two years after letting Farhan Zaidi go in part because of roster churn? The Giants currently are at 70 players, but No. 71 settled back into the clubhouse Wednesday. Catcher Zach Morgan is here on the taxi squad and soon could take the spot of Osleivis Basabe, who has a tight hamstring.
Morgan was up for 10 days earlier in the second half but didn’t get into a game, a bummer given how uncertain the future is for players on the back end of the 40-man roster. At some point early in the offseason, the Giants will have to part with 16 of them to open spots for all of the players on the 60-day IL.
Manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that “come hell or high water, I’d like to get (Morgan) on that field and get him an opportunity to do something.” When Morgan makes his MLB debut this weekend, the Giants will join the 2025 Atlanta Braves as the only teams in MLB history to use 71 players in a season.
