I kind of felt sorry for Don Mattingly, the Dodgers' new manager, as his teamcame to Scottsdale Stadium to play the Giants on Saturday. He's agood man, but his job description ranks even lower than "captain ofthe Titanic," as the old saying goes. He's the guy appointedcaptain after the ship struck ice. The Giants had no problem handling a split-squad version of the Dodgers , 8-3, on a cold and cloudyday in the desert, and while the score meant nothing, it spoke to aglaring disparity between the teams. The Giants are defending worldchampions and showing the brand of hunger necessary to repeat. The Dodgers are just hoping theirlaughingstock owners don't sink the ship entirely.
