ST. LOUIS Madison Bumgarner approached second base, looked overhis shoulder and frantically held out his palm like a stop sign. Hewanted to make sure Andres Torres didn't zoom past him on thebasepaths after hitting his grand slam. As problems go for the Giants' offense, this was a wee bitout of the norm. Torres' slam in the fourth inning opened up a one-run game,Bumgarner held down the high-powered St. Louis Cardinals, and foronce, the worst offense in the National League found plenty ofchange in the cushions as the Giants won 7-3 at steamy BuschStadium Monday afternoon. "You know Torres. He can get a little crazy out there," saidBumgarner, who had worked a walk to load the bases. "I was beingcautious, making sure it went out, and here he was, flying down theline."
