It's not often that a baseball season is summed up in a singleplay, but it happened in Arizona on Friday night in the game thatessentially sent the Giants home for the winter. A SanFrancisco pitcher made one mistake, and the Diamondbacks beat himwith a vaguely familiar name. There simply was no margin for error for the Giants' pitching staff - not in thisgame, not in this entire season. Sergio Romo was the victim this time, anAll-Star-caliber reliever delivering a breaking pitch that caughttoo much of the plate in the bottom of the eighth. Paul Goldschmidt , a Diamondbacks rookie and asymbol of this team's emergence from oblivion, lined the two-runtriple that clinched the National League West title.
Play that summed up a season
