Matty Alou, a batting champion and one of three brothers whomade history by playing together in the Giants' outfield, died Thursday inthe Dominican Republic of diabetes-related heart failure. He was72. The smallest and quietest of the Alou brothers, Matty was a .307career hitter over 15 seasons, his first six in San Francisco. Withan abundance of outfielders, the Giants dealt him to Pittsburgh afterthe 1965 season in which he hit .231. The next year, he led theNational League with a .342 average.
