The San Francisco Giants placed Hector Sanchez (sprained left knee) on the disabled list before Wednesday's 9-4 win in 11 innings in Atlanta and promoted Whiteside from Triple-A Fresno, so Whiteside will be the backup catcher to Buster Posey.
