ST. LOUIS — Since the 2010 season when the Philadelphia Phillies missed making the World Series for what would have been a third straight year, the National League champion has been either the St. Louis Cardinals or San Francisco Giants. It's the second time since 2012 the teams have met for the Warren Giles Trophy, and the Giants won in seven games two years ago. They're acquainted. Representatives from both teams call what happened two years ago ancient history, though Cards skipper Mike Matheny remembers vividly the first playoff series he ever lost as a manager. "We have lots of respect for each other," Matheny said. They play similar styles, too. Offensively, the Giants outscored the Cardinals 665-619 overall, but there was just a 10 point difference between collective on-base plus slugging — .699 to .689 in favor of the Giants. Most of the difference came in power, notably because of home runs, where the Giants placed last in the NL. Stolen bases were about even — with both teams at the bottom of the NL.
