ST. LOUIS — For the second straight time in the playoffs Saturday night, ace right-hander Adam Wainwright failed to get through the fifth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals. The San Francisco Giants didn't exactly knock him around, and St. Louis's defense let him down at least twice, but Wainwright wasn't sharp over 4 2/3 innings in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. He allowed three runs (two earned), six hits and three walks, and left trailing 3-0. The most telling stat: Wainwright needed 98 pitches. In his previous outing in the NL Division Series against the Dodgers, Wainwright lasted just 4 1/3 innings, though he got hit much harder that night, allowing six runs and 11 hits. Wainwright didn't say so at the time, but he was experiencing elbow discomfort, as he has periodically this season, during the Dodgers game. In a press conference Friday afternoon, Wainwright admitted it was bothering him during the NLDS, but that observers shouldn't worry about it leading to another Tommy John surgery.
