ST. LOUIS — Mike Matheny said he refuses to play the role of oddsmaker regarding catcher Yadier Molina being able to return to the National League Championship Series after sustaining a strained left oblique muscle in the sixth inning of Game 2 on Tuesday night. Molina hit into a 4-6-3 double play in his third plate appearance, but did not make a move to first base on his grounder; instead, he stood doubled over in obvious discomfort. Escorted by the athletic training staff, Molina shuffled to the dugout and did not return behind the plate in the seventh inning. Tony Cruz replaced him. Without their backbone, the Cards still beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on the strength of four solo home runs, including a game-ending shot by Kolten Wong against Sergio Romo in the bottom of the ninth, which also evened the best-of-seven series at 1-1. Despite the victory, not having Molina going forward would change the calculus of the rest of St. Louis' season.
