The biggest story from a sports auction in Texas over the weekend was Vince Lombardi's West Point sweater selling for $43,020 after being found and purchased at a Goodwill for just 58 cents. But another fascinating set of items was sold in the same auction, and at a much higher price. The gloves worn by Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston in their controversial 1965 bout were sold by Heritage Auctions for $965,000 to a private collector. The bout is famous for its polarizing "phantom punch," which abruptly felled Liston in the first round, ending the fight. Did he take the fall? Did Ali hit him so quickly and clinically that it looked fake? Either way, the set of gloves didn't cost nearly $1 million because they were heavily used. While we love the Lombardi story, it still doesn't quite hold a place in sports history like these gloves, and pretty much explains the price tag.
