Given the San Francisco Giants' sluggish start and the all-consuming, mostly depressing state of the world, there wasn't exactly a Twitter-shattering reaction on Friday when chief executive Larry Baer announced that the team would be adding names to the back of their home jerseys beginning in 2021. But allow me to make the argument to my fellow Giants fans that the name addition is a big deal, and a big mistake. It's unnecessary change for the sake of unnecessary change. It doesn't add anything to the Giants' current look; in fact, it subtracts from it. And it further removes the Giants from the greatest run in the history of the franchise.
